What's Up on the Web:

A fortnightly update on items of special interest to researchers on Indonesia and East Timor and accessible through links on this page.

# 12 - International Crisis Group

The International Crisis Group posts recent reports, briefings, and conflict histories on Indonesia and Timor-Leste in English and (often) Indonesian on their web site.  The site also has a media section and a large research resources section.  You can sign up for email notifications, too.

From the home page of the International Crisis Group:

"The International Crisis Group is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organisation, with nearly 120 staff members on five continents, working through field-based analysis and high-level advocacy to prevent and resolve deadly conflict.

Crisis Group's approach is grounded in field research. Teams of political analysts are located within or close by countries at risk of outbreak, escalation or recurrence of violent conflict. Based on information and assessments from the field, it produces analytical reports containing practical recommendations targeted at key international decision-takers. . . "

Here is the Indonesia page.  The Indonesia program is described as follows:

"Crisis Group's Jakarta-based team reports and recommends policy on the country's transition to full democracy, separatist struggles in Aceh and Papua, communal violence and the role of radical Islam."

Here is the Timor-Leste page (with a new report, published on October 10).

A helpful tool is their Conflict Histories Database where you can find a summary of the background of each conflict.  Of course, the whole site is searchable.

And here are their Research Resources & Links.
